Ethiopian Airlines said it will commence “its new six weekly flights to Dhaka, Bangladesh, starting November 1, 2024. The new service will be operated with the state-of-the-art Boeing B787 Dreamliner, offering passengers a comfortable and seamless travel experience.”
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) data for July 2024 global passenger demand shows that “African airlines saw a 7.4% year-on-year increase in demand. Capacity was up 6.7% year-on-year. The load factor rose to 74.3% (+0.5ppt compared to July 2023).”
Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Barr. Festus Keyamo SAN has signed “a significant Memorandum of Understanding with Boeing.” This strategic partnership according to Boeing is set to “strengthen the West African country’s aviation sector.”
Ethiopian Airlines in partnership with Boeing and Think Young, are “strengthening their commitment to STEM education for Ethiopian.” According to ET, this year, “28 high school students in grade 11, with an impressive 50% female participation, successfully completed the second edition of the STEM School program, designed to equip them with critical skills in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).”

The International Air Transport Association has released “data for July 2024 global air cargo markets showing continuing strong annual growth in demand.” According to the data, “African airlines saw 6.2% year-on-year demand growth for air cargo in July – the lowest of all regions and their lowest recorded figure in 2024.” The data further reveals that “Demand on the Africa–Asia market increased by 15.4% compared to July 2023. July capacity increased by 10.5% year-on-year.”
As IATA’s data shows that “Demand on the Africa-Asia market increased by 40.6% compared to May 2023”, leading African cargo airline, Astral Aviation Limited, is leveraging the opportunity to launch “its inaugural flight from the People’s Republic of China.” This landmark flight, departing from the bustling city of Guangzhou to Nairobi with an onward connection to Maputo, the capital of the Republic of Mozambique, marks a significant milestone in the airline’s expansion into the Asian market.

Horizon Aircraft, an advanced aerospace engineering company and developer of the world’s first eVTOL (electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) says “Tom Brassington has been appointed as Chief Technology Officer.” According to Horizon: “Tom joins from Lilium, a leading eVTOL developer, where he held the position of Head of System Design Engineering. He takes up his new role at Horizon Aircraft at the end of October 2024.”
The African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) adopted a different approach for the Single African Air Transport Market Project Implementation (SAATM-PIP) Airshow in Freetown, Sierra Leone by leveraging the bloc strength of Banjul Accord Group (BAG) to push for further acceleration of SAATM implementation within the bloc. According to the Secretary General of AFCAC, Ms Adefunke Adeyemi: “This particular airshow is very unique to us in the sense that we have all the member States of the Banjul Accord Group (BAG) present here with us.”

Boeing’s “Board of Directors has elected Robert K. “Kelly” Ortberg as the company’s new president and chief executive officer, effective August 8, 2024. Ortberg will also serve on Boeing’s Board of Directors”, according to the aircraft manufacturer. Otberg succeeds Dave Calhoun, “who earlier this year announced his intention to retire from the company, having served as president and CEO since January 2020, and as a member of Boeing’s Board of Directors since 2009.”
